A Tribute to ASSIST Director Ferdie Wandelt

ASSIST Director Ferdie Wandelt

On Wednesday, July 24, 2013, ASSIST lost a friend, a mentor, a leader and a legend in the field. ASSIST Director Frederick (“Ferdie”) Wandelt III passed away in Waterbury Hospital (CT), from sudden complications of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, surrounded by his family and his dear friend Yi-ming Yang, ASSIST/Taft ’87.

Since that time, we have been blessed to be able to honor Ferdie on several occasions. Bob Stanley joined Peter Frew, Taft School, and Tom Southworth, Loomis Chaffee School, to make remarks at the annual conference of SSATB (Secondary School Admissions Test Board). Bob also shared remarks at the memorial service held at Taft School, as did Director Yi-ming Yang ’87.

More recently, Bob praised Ferdie's contributions during the ASSIST Board dinner. Ferdie had just begun his 30th year of service to the Board when he passed. During his remarks, Bob presented a globe with an inscribed plaque to Ferdie's wife, Joanna, to thank her and to express on all of our behalves the affection, respect and appreciation we hold for Ferdie.

The text of Bob's three speeches are posted on this page, as are videos of his and Yi-ming's speeches at the Taft service.
