ASSIST Returns to Romania!

Thanks to the Dinu Patriciu Foundation

We are pleased to announce that the Dinu Patriciu Foundation has made a commitment to fund three students from Romania who “possess a pronounced spirit of initiative, an outstanding civic consciousness and a genuine sense of social responsibility.  We can’t think of a description that better fits our ASSIST scholars.

ASSIST was active in Romania from 1992/93 to 2000/01 through the sponsorship of the Open Society Institute.  During that time, 38 Romanian students studied in the States as ASSIST Scholars. It has long been our intention to return to Romania, and the generosity of the Dinu Patriciu Foundation has made this possible. Our first ASSIST & Dinu Patriciu Scholars will be arriving this fall!

Dinu Patriciu is a successful and well-respected businessman and philanthropist in Romania with a deep commitment to his country’s future.  His Foundation was formed with the expressed purpose of creating positive change his country through education. For more information about the foundation a link follows:  http://fundatiadinupatriciu.ro/en/programul-de-schimb-assist-fdp

ASSIST provides our alumni with a network that spans the globe and makes personal and professional opportunities possible. We have Ioana Niculcea, ASSIST ’01 (Mercersburg and the University of Virginia) to thank for making the connection between ASSIST and the Dinu Patriciu Foundation.  She did so with the hope that other young Romanian scholars might benefit from her same life-changing ASSIST experience.  She is pictured second to the left along with Lena von Sperber, Wyoming Seminary 94, Michal Mojzis, Landon School ’09, and Miro Batka, Montgomery Bell Academy ’02 at an alumni gathering in Washington, DC.

We hope that more of our alumni will reach out in the same way.  Our thanks again to the Foundation and to Ioana.
